History of North Fork
North Fork, California, is a historic foothills community in Madera County known as the exact geographic center of the state. Originally inhabited by the Mono Native Americans, the town was established in the 1850s by gold prospectors and grew into a massive logging hub for the timber industry.
- The Mono Ancestors: The region is the ancestral home of the Mono people, who called the area Wa-up, meaning "Place of the Cedars". They lived sustainably in the mountains for thousands of years until the Gold Rush brought an influx of miners and settlers.
- Milton Brown's Cabin (1852): Prospector Milton Brown built a cabin on Willow Creek (then known as the north fork of the San Joaquin River). This cabin quickly became a central supply hub and stopover for miners, cattle ranchers, and homesteaders.
- Town Founding & U.S. Forest Service (1888–1893): The town was officially founded in 1888 with the establishment of a post office. In 1893, the U.S. Forest Service established its headquarters in North Fork, cementing the area's connection to the land.
- The Logging Boom (1940s–1990s): While originally drawn by gold, the town's lifeblood became timber. The Associated Lumber and Box Company purchased local land and opened a massive mill in 1943. This timber boom lasted for decades before industry shifts and environmental protections forced the mill to close.
- Present Day Revival: Today, North Fork is a quiet mountain town that celebrates its cultural roots through the Sierra Mono Museum and the annual Mid-Sierra Loggers Jamboree.
